The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians is one of the nine federally recognized Native American Tribes in the State of Oregon. The Tribal people of Oregon are historically just as diverse as the languages they spoke. Cow Creek people lived in the forests and rugged mountains of the Umpqua and Rogue River Valleys of Southern Oregon and spoke Takelma, their ancestral language. However, the arrival of fur trappers, miners, gold rushers, and missionaries in the 19th century almost completely eradicated the Takelma language. The U.S Government removed Cow Creek people from the Umpqua and Rogue River Valleys, leading to very few Cow Creeks being able to hide in the mountains, while others were forced to assimilate and speak English, leading to a decline in the use of Takelma.

Now, efforts are being made to reclaim the Takelma language. The Tribe is using documentation and limited recordings of Takelma to learn and teach others to speak it, resulting in more Tribal citizens speaking the language every day. The Takelma language is being reclaimed, and it is being woven into every batch of coffee at the Takelma Roasting Company, which is proudly owned and operated by the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians.

Located in Southern Oregon's Umpqua Valley, the aim of the Takelma Roasting Company is to craft high-quality, specialty-grade coffee and to honor and share the traditional language of the Tribe. Their coffee, including a deep rich dark chocolatey French roast made from Colombian and Brazilian Arabica beans, is a tribute to the history and culture of the Tribe.

The simple blessing spoken in Takelma serves as a reminder of the Tribe's deep connection to the land and the people, including those who are enjoying their coffee. The efforts to preserve the Takelma language and culture are evident in every aspect of the Takelma Roasting Company.
